“They got out through there, Inspector.” The constable directed his comment toward me and pointed to the window. “Looks like the victim put up a fight.”
Red hand prints marred the barely open leaded glass and my attention swung to the adjacent desk where—slumped over it, clutching a plasma-laden knife—sat the apparently strangled dean of Canterbury College.
“Check hospitals,” I said. “I’ll warrant they’re badly injured and won’t get too far. And send this knife to forensics. I want DNA and fingerprints. What’s this?”
I read aloud the note, apparently strategically placed under the deceased’s hand.
“You’re next.”
ooh… the opening to a great mystery novel, methinks

Dear Elmo. As I said to Patricia, I have a few memory and concentration problems, so I don’t think I would be able to keep track of the complicated plot lines that writing a mystery would involve. However, thank you for the wonderful compliment 🙂 I’m glad you liked this little story 😀

Haha, that’s exactly why I couldn’t write mysteries too! Maybe we need to take a class together!

Alice, Good mystery. I love mysteries. It stands well alone but would also be a great beginning for a longer story. Well done. 🙂 —Susan

It’s funny, I never thought I would be able to write a full scale mystery, and am still doubtful, but thank you for thinking I could :).
I have a few memory and concentration problems, so I don’t think I would be able to keep track of anything too complicated like a mystery would most certainly involve. But, small excerpts like this seem to be a lot easier for me to handle 🙂
Thank you, Patricia, for your comments and kind words 🙂

I enjoyed this piece. My only suggestion would be to remove, “I issued instructions.” I feel the story would flow better without it.

I think you are right. I will have to find three more words though to make the whole an even 100 🙂 I am sure I can do that 😉 Thank you, Cole 🙂

While reading other’s work, the picture has finally appeared larger than it seemed on Wednesday and I saw the window above the arch and wondered why no one had written a story using that as the subject. WELL DONE! I love your take!
